Remember when you were a kid and you’d come inside from the cold? What was the first thing that you wanted? That’s right, hot cocoa! I still love hot cocoa! I mean, do you ever really grow out of hot cocoa? The answer is, no, you don’t…if you’re me, at least. While I still enjoy a good, hot cup of Swiss Miss (complete with marshmallows, of course), nothing beats making your own, especially if it’s Dark Hot Cocoa Mix!
The idea to create my own hot cocoa mix, first crossed my mind when my husband was in Afghanistan to give him a taste of home, especially around the holidays. You see, when he was gone, I was still a full-time grease monkey working on helicopters but I still needed something to fill the void during the 2-3 hours after work before I went to bed to avoid staring at the wall every night for a year. During this time, I took up challenging myself to create meals and treats from scratch since there was no one there to witness some of the…we’ll just call them unfortunate creations.
That same year for Christmas, after I built up some kitchen confidence, I decided to create gift baskets with some of the goodies I taught myself to make. Everything from homemade corncob jelly (I’m from Nebraska and yes, you can make jelly out of corncobs and yes, it’s delicious!) to fudge was in this basket. But one of those things was my homemade Dark Hot Cocoa Mix and one that I still make for my kids to this day and, regularly sent to my husband in Afghanistan.
Creating your own hot cocoa mix is incredibly easy, so easy in fact, that it will leave you wondering why you didn’t do it before! Since everything in the mix itself must be a dry ingredient, it narrows down the focus on ingredients but still has plenty of room for a little creativity! The best part is, it makes plenty of mix so you won’t have to whip up a new batch every time you want cocoa, thus making your efforts well worth it!
It is a great addition to gift baskets if you were planning on doing a DIY Christmas or looking for a fun teacher’s gift. Just put it in cute little glass cookie jars that you can get at the Dollar Store, tie a ribbon around it and Voila! A delicious, perfect-for-the-season and oh-so-adorable gift. Just a thought!
One more thing, don’t forget to dress it up, I mean, what is a cup of hot cocoa without whipped cream drizzled with more chocolate and marshmallows? Unacceptable! That is, if we’re going by the standards of our 8 year-old selves which I think that we can all agree is a good idea when it comes to cocoa. So, let’s get right to this simple creation and you will be sitting by the fire with a nice cup of from-scratch hot cocoa in no time!
